Classic Americano Padel — The Complete Guide
What Is Classic Americano?
Classic Americano is the most widely played social padel tournament format. Every participant plays with a different partner each round, and individual scores accumulate across all matches. The player with the highest total at the end wins — regardless of how many individual matches they won or lost.
The format's strength lies in its inclusivity. Because partners rotate, a beginner paired with an experienced player in one round may find themselves opposing that same experienced player in the next. Over the course of a full tournament, skill differences even out and the social element stays front and center.

How It Works
A Classic Americano tournament is divided into rounds. Each round, every available player is assigned a partner and placed on a court to play one match. After the match, scores are recorded, partners are reshuffled, and the next round begins.
Partner Rotation
The defining feature of Classic Americano is that no player keeps the same partner for two consecutive rounds. The rotation follows a round-robin schedule designed to pair each player with every other player at least once. In a tournament with 8 players, this means 7 rounds are needed for complete rotation — each player has partnered with all 7 others exactly once.
For larger groups where full rotation would take too long, the generator optimizes the schedule to maximize variety within a reasonable number of rounds. Even without a complete rotation, no pairing repeats until all possible combinations have been used.

Match Scoring
Each match is played to a fixed number of points — commonly 21 or 32. There is no advantage or deuce; the match ends the moment one side reaches the target score. Both players on the winning side receive the winning score (e.g., 21), while both players on the losing side receive their actual score (e.g., 15). Every point scored counts toward your individual total.
This means losing 19–21 is far better than losing 5–21. There is always an incentive to fight for every point, even in a match you are likely to lose.
| Match | Result | Anna | Carlos | Bella | David |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Court 1 | Anna & Carlos beat Bella & David 24–18 | 24 | 24 | 18 | 18 |
Overall Standings
The leaderboard ranks players by total accumulated points across all rounds. If two players are tied on total points, tiebreakers are applied in order: most matches won, then highest single-match score, then head-to-head record. The player at the top of the leaderboard after all rounds is the champion.

Setting Up Your Tournament
Organizing a Classic Americano requires just three decisions: how many players, how many courts, and how many points per match.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 30–45 min |
| 5 | 1 | 5 | 1 | 1–1.25 hrs |
| 6 | 1 | 5 | 2 | 1–1.25 hrs |

| 16 | 4 | 5–7 | 0 | 1.5–2 hrs |
| 20–24 | 5–6 | 5–7 | 0–4 | 2–2.5 hrs |
Estimated Duration
Each round takes approximately 15–20 minutes for a 21-point match, plus 2–3 minutes for changeover. Multiply by the number of rounds to estimate total time. For 8 players on 2 courts with 7 rounds: expect 2 to 2.5 hours including breaks.
