Americano and Mexicano are the two most popular social padel tournament formats. Both use individual scoring and rotating partners — but they differ in one critical way: how matchups are determined.

Americano: Pre-Determined Rotation

In Americano, the full rotation schedule is generated before the first ball is hit. Every player knows who they'll partner with in each round. The algorithm ensures fair distribution of partnerships.

This makes Americano easy to organize. Print the schedule, post it on the wall, and let rounds flow. No calculations between rounds.

Mexicano: Standings-Based Pairing

Mexicano takes a dynamic approach. Only the first round is random. After that, the leaderboard determines matchups — the top-ranked players face each other, while lower-ranked players get matches at their level.

This creates increasingly competitive matches as the tournament progresses. By the final rounds, the title race is usually between players of very similar skill.
